How We Protect Your Data

GoCarma is built with privacy by design. Learn what data we collect, how it’s stored, and the steps we take to keep your information secure.

Written by Emmett Murphy

Your privacy is our top priority. GoCarma collects only the data needed to verify your commute activity and calculate incentives — nothing more.

We use industry-standard encryption, limited data retention, and transparent privacy practices to ensure your personal information is secure at every step.

🔐 What Data We Collect

GoCarma collects:

  • Your home and work locations — to define your commute route and baseline.

  • Trip data — time, distance, and general travel mode (e.g., carpool, walk, transit).

  • Device activity — motion and location signals used to verify trip start, end, and mode.

  • Account info — email, phone number, and employer name for communication and eligibility.

We never collect or store sensitive content like text messages, contacts, or browsing history.

🧭 How We Use Your Data

Your data is used to:

  • Detect and verify commute trips.

  • Calculate vehicle miles traveled (VMT) reductions.

  • Determine incentive payments.

  • Provide anonymized data for regional sustainability reports.

Trip data is de-identified and aggregated before being used for analysis or reporting.

🧱 How We Keep It Secure

  • All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest.

  • Access is restricted to authorized personnel under role-based permissions.

  • Routine audits and monitoring ensure compliance with SBCTA and state privacy standards.

  • Data retention follows California privacy guidelines.

🗓️ How Long We Keep Your Data

Trip and account data are retained only as long as needed to operate the program and verify incentive eligibility.
